Case Study // Waste Management in Danang, Vietnam

By Martin Schaub and Jérémie Bertrand. This case study analyses the feasibility of viable solutions for an environmentally friendly and future-proof disposal of approximately 1,000 tonnes per day of municipal waste at Da Nang, the fourth largest city in Vietnam and largest city in Central Vietnam. The authors show that a technology apt to meet the specific waste composition of the reagion could replace the energy-inefficient and uneconomical incineration treatment with a Nexus approach-based treatment that could pay off, save energy and water.

For the two landfill sites near Da Nang, Khanh Son and Hoa Nhon, this study develops a waste management concept with the aim of incorporating advanced mechanical biological waste treatment technologies in order to improve the economic and ecological situation of waste disposal. The concepts are based on data collected at the two sites and these data were combined with international, regional as well as site- specific information and political guidelines of decision-makers (stakeholders). Subsequently the required technical processes are adapted to the site conditions. Finally the new plants are dimensioned and budgeted in this study. The case study describes two concepts for a Sustainable Waste Management System for the two locations Khanh So and Hoa Nhon.
