Organizations from the Asia-Pacific Region contribute to the debate around water, energy and food security: The Regional Workshop held in Seoul on the 20th of October, organized as part of the stakeholder engagement process for the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference, aimed to address the linkages between water, energy and food security and the challenges for a multisectoral approach that guarantees long-term supply and equitable access to the three securities. The event was moderated by: Uchita de Zoysa, Executive Director of the Centre for Environment and Development, Sri Lanka. The panellists were Chee Yokeling, Director of Programmes for Third World Network (Malaysia), Neth Dano, Programme Manager for the ETC Group (Philippines), and Jeannet Lingán, Senior Project Officer for Stakeholder Forum. Opening words were provided by Steven Stone, UNEP. In the first part of the workshop, the panellists addressed the nexus approach to food, water and energy security, the on-going debate around the green economy ahead of Rio+20 and the stakeholder engagement process for Bonn2011. In the second part of the session, participants took part in a discussion to address the most pressing issues around the nexus, the challenges and trade-offs that can be expected if the approach is to work for the poor, and recommendations to address those challenges. The participants highlighted the fact that the existing economic paradigm encourages the unsustainable exploitation of resources and fails to account for environmental limits, recommending that governments work to harmonize policies around the three securities, among a series of other measures.
