The course, created by Water Peace and Security Partnership, is free, open to anyone interested, and available to complete on your own time. The modules consist of video lectures, reading materials, and online quizzes. There are currently two modules, but more will be added so please check back later.
Module One
An introduction to the Water Peace and Security (WPS) framework as a whole as well as the interlinkages of water, peace and security. This module outlines the WPS approach and how this is tailored to suit the broader fields of water, conflict and cooperation.
The instruction, readings, and activities are guided by the following learning objectives:
- Explain and identify the interlinkages of water, peace and security. Also introduce key concepts and challenges and potential relations (pathways) between water-related risks, human insecurity and conflict
- Discuss and reflect different angles and perspectives
- Understand the complexity and variety of water, peace and security; understand what intervening factors could influence the conflict- or cooperation-driving role of water challenges
- Engage with the WPS approach, learn about the goals, strategies and approaches
Module Two
An introduction to the Water, Peace, and Security Partnership’s Global Early Warning Tool, an online resource that helps identify hot spots of water-related conflict and forecasts where conflict is likely to emerge or to continue in the next 12 months. The module provides instructions on how to use the tool.
The instruction, readings, and activities are guided by the following learning objectives:
- Explain how the Global Early Warning Tool fits within the WPS framework and what the next steps are to address water conflict
- Understand how the conflict forecast is generated and updated
- Discuss how water is analyzed within the Global Early Warning Tool and how this connection aligns with the understanding established in Lesson 1
- Engage in how to use the Global Early Warning Tool and be aware of its limitations
