The deterioration of the Azraq aquifer during the past 20 years ago has dramatically altered the environmental features of the Azraq basin, and this is caused by the overexploitation of the aquifer’s groundwater where it has exceeded its safe yield limit of the allowable abstraction of 24 MCM/y to be nearly tripled.

GIZ, the German agency for international cooperation, has decided through the Highland Water Forum (HWF) to implement the first solar energy farm in the Azraq basin as a showcase model for the irrigation farmers trying to aware the Azraq society to shift from conventional farming into solar energy farming as an adaptive reaction to the water scarcity that impacting the basin.
