The Nexus and Solar-powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS)

Solar Powered Irrigation Systems (SPIS) represent one of the most prominent interdependencies of the water, energy and food sectors. The renewable, climate-friendly technology is the fastest growing of all solar energy applications. By enhancing the irrigation capacity, SPIS provide a great opportunity for food security. Irrigation not only boosts agricultural productivity in times of population growth, but also reduces climate vulnerability. This WEF-Nexus solution is rapidly expanding, as photovoltaic panels are getting more affordable for farmers in developing countries. However, adequate management of water resources is crucial in order to avoid over-exploitation and thus increases the urgency of integrated governance systems being in place. SPIS technology has potential to improve livelihoods and economic prosperity.

The GIZ Powering Agriculture Team has supported University Ostfalia to develop an e-learning course on Solar Powered Irrigation Systems. The course will be entirely online and look at sustainable water management, solar pumping essentials, planning and implementation, and operation and maintenance. E-tutors will support the students throughout the course.
