About the Event

Ecosystems are an integral part of the solution for food, energy and water problems. However, many ecosystems and particularly in Africa and the Albertine Rift region are facing severe degradation to unsustainable practices and climate change. This leads to disruption of ecosystem functions and services, thus threatening their ability to realize the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its Sustainable Development Goals (IPBES, 2018). Lake Kivu and the Ruzizi River basin covers an area of 13,385 km² with the core area covering 20%, 46% and 34% in Burundi, RDC and Rwanda respectively. It is a densely populated catchment with currently 10.9 million habitants projected to reach 27.3 million habitants by 2050 and currently distributed in 1.6 million in Burundi, 6.8 million in DRC and 2.5 million in Rwanda (ABAKIR 2020). As a result of high population pressure and unsustainable practices from agriculture, fishing, infrastructure development, and climate change, Lake Kivu basin faces enormous threats on both Rwanda and DRC sides including siltation and dry out of some tributaries to the lake Kivu. The Albertine Rift Conservation Society (ARCOS) is partnering with ABAKIR (Autorité du Bassin du Lac Kivu et de la Rivière Ruzizi), GIZ (Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH) and Rwanda Water Resources Board to pilot efficient and resilient best management practices to conserve biodiversity and restore degraded land across lake Kivu and Rusizi river basin and integrate incentive measures that mitigate negative impact of climate change and unsustainable agriculture on biodiversity productivity and community’s capacity to sustain livelihoods through pilot interventions that consider the nexus around water-energy-food and ecosystem.
