What’s the NEXUS?

Bonn2011 Nexus Conference

The primary objective of the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference was to bring together a broad range of stakeholders from the water, energy and food sectors in an effort to improve understanding of the interdependencies and develop a joint perspective on the common challenges. The conference focussed its discussions on options and solutions as well as on enabling environments and incentives for change.

The conference showcased innovative solutions and helped forge a common policy agenda to address the water, food and energy challenges. Its deliberations apply the Nexus perspective. This requires sectoral decisions to reflect the consequences for other objectives and exploit potential productivity and efficiency gains within every sector. Furthermore, unavoidable trade-offs between competing objectives must be entered into consciously on a well-informed basis. By bringing together a wide range of international experts and decision-makers within a multilevel conference framework, the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference provided an important open platform for exchanging research findings, practical experiences and new ideas.

The Bonn2011 Nexus Conference delivered on three main objectives:

To develop policy recommendations based on multi-stakeholder consultations and adopting a nexus perspective

The Bonn2011 Nexus Conference facilitated the definition of key elements of a common agenda for the different sectors and stakeholders to better achieve water, energy and food security for all. Based on a long-term consultation process with different stakeholder groups, five opportunity areas have been identified that provide the basis for the development of concrete recommendations and specific actions as an essential outcome of the Conference.

To position the Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus perspective as a key dimension of the Rio+20 process

The United Nations General Assembly has decided to convene a Conference on Sustainable Development in June 2012 as the twenty-year follow-up to the groundbreaking “Earth Summit” of 1992. As a specific contribution to the Rio+20 Conference, Germany provided a platform for all stakeholders to develop a common policy agenda to achieve Water, Energy and Food Security and specific recommendations on how to position the Nexus perspective in the Rio+20 process. The Conference results represent an important part of Germany’s contribution to the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development.

To launch concrete initiatives to address the Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus in a coherent and sustainable way

Apart from policy recommendations, the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference developed concrete initiatives to foster action in Nexus-relevant policy fields. Furthermore, the German Government has invited stakeholders to submit existing and emerging initiatives or policy commitments for announcement at the conference. To foster action on Water, Energy and Food Security, the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference offered a high-level platform to explore cooperation and promote initiatives as well as policy commitments that address the issues and challenges within the Water, Energy and Food Nexus.
