Bonn2011 Conference Synopsis

The Conference Synopsis is now available

On November 16-18, 2011, more than 550 people gathered in Bonn, Germany, to explore a visionary method of achieving sustainability through a groundbreaking conference called “The Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus – Solutions for the Green Economy”.

As the UN Secretary-General’s High-Level Panel on Global Sustainability stated in its recently published report “Resilient People, Resilient Planet: A future worth choosing”, “it is critical that we embrace a new nexus between food, water and energy rather than treating them in different “silos”. All three need to be fully integrated, not treated separately if we are to deal with the global food security crisis. It is time to embrace a second green revolution - an “ever-green revolution” - that doubles yields but builds on sustainability principles.”

In our interconnected world, sectoral “silos” are no longer acceptable ways to approach our targets, because solutions based only on one sector or discipline will unavoidably affect other sectors, whether by design or accident. As humanity looks to the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) for guidance and inspiration, the water-energy-food security nexus must be given a prominent role if viable and practical solutions are to be produced.

The Conference Synopsis, which was produced by OOSKAnews www.ooskanews.com, is an easy-to-read document summarizing the Conference highlights, enriched by quotes from high-level Conference participants; it also includes various case studies such as “India: Nexus leads to annual 9,6% GDP growth” or “New seawater greenhouse technology replenishes irrigation” to illustrate the Nexus approach and the Green Economy.

“The flapping of a butterfly’s wings may or may not have the capacity to trigger a tornado on another continent, but without a doubt, our food, water and energy systems have profound impacts upon each other (and us, and our planet). With that in mind, we’re excited to introduce our new GRACE website, which we built to reflect the interconnected nature of these three systems.”

Do we really understand - or think sufficiently about - the “Energy-Water-Food Nexus”? That was the concern shared during a searching Singapore Energy Summit plenary session on Monday.

The ‘nexus’ has become a popular buzz word to describe the complex linkages among water, energy and food security – sectors that have traditionally remained fairly separate. Talk of the water-energy-food nexus was a hot topic at last month’s Planet Under Pressure conference; it is also the focus of a significant German government-organised input to the UN Rio+20 Summit. What has brought nexus thinking to the fore, and what does this nexus look like? How does it relate to climate compatible development?

We all use fresh water every day; however, the fact remains that a large amount of the water used daily in the United States — and around the world — is by companies. That’s because water is not only vital to survival, it’s vital to our global economy. Energy generation, agricultural irrigation, industrial processes and mining, oil and gas activities all use water as a major input; in the U.S., these activities account for over 80 percent of our freshwater use. For this reason, water is a hot topic at this week’s Fortune Brainstorm GREEN conference underway in Laguna Nigel, California. At this gathering of some of the best and brightest thinkers in sustainability, CEOs and other leaders from corporations and NGOs are tackling tough environmental topics, including the energy-water-food nexus and hydraulic fracturing for natural gas production.
