Stakeholder Section established

A message from Felix Dodds, Executive Director of the Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future and International Steering Committee (ISC) Member

The Bonn2011 Nexus Conference offers a unique opportunity for multi-stakeholder inputs into the development of integrated solutions for a green economy, addressing connections within the water, energy and food security nexus.

Today, nearly one billion people do not have access to safe drinking water, one billion people suffer from hunger, and 2.5 billion people do not have access to modern forms of energy. Global trends such as population growth and increased economic prosperity in developing and emerging economies are also set to increase the world’s demand for our water, energy and food resources.

Simultaneously, global challenges including climate change and rapid urbanisation will further exasperate pressures on scarce resources, potentially jeopardizing development goals to improve human well-being and poverty eradication, while agitating social and political tensions and creating further environmental damage.

Recognising the urgent need for new approaches which address interlinkages within the water, energy and food security nexus, the German Government has convened the “Bonn2011 Conference: The Water Energy and Food Security Nexus – Solutions for the Green Economy”.

This significant international conference aims to catalyse the development of recommendations on how to create new and integrated solutions for a green economy. To this end, the preparatory process towards the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference seeks to engage a broad range of stakeholders for inputs.
In partnership with the German Government, Stakeholder Forum is coordinating stakeholder consultations and workshops in order to feed in ideas from global civil society and other stakeholder constituencies across both developed and developing countries. Please click here to find out ways to get involved in the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference and contribute to the debates on the nexus approach and the solutions it can stimulate.

The ideas and recommendations generated in preparation for and during the international conference in Bonn will also feed into the Earth Summit 2012 prepartory process – the fourth Summit of its kind, representing another milestone in ongoing international efforts to accelerate progress towards achieving sustainable development globally.

The Bonn2011 Nexus Conference is a critical opportunity that will harness multi-stakeholder decision making to create innovative solutions to the global trends we face. I wholeheartedly encourage you and your organisation to participate in the process towards the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference.

For instance, you may wish to participate in our online stakeholder consultation or write for the Nexus Blog. Please click here for further information on how to get involved and be a part of the solutions.

“The flapping of a butterfly’s wings may or may not have the capacity to trigger a tornado on another continent, but without a doubt, our food, water and energy systems have profound impacts upon each other (and us, and our planet). With that in mind, we’re excited to introduce our new GRACE website, which we built to reflect the interconnected nature of these three systems.”

With population rising, how can a water crisis be averted? After two unusually dry winters - which have left reservoirs, aquifers and rivers below normal levels - seven water companies across southern and eastern England are about to impose water restrictions. But experts say population growth and climate change could spell a much grimmer future.
