Stakeholder Session // Water-Energy-Food Nexus research in Southern Africa
An online kick-off workshop will take place on April 7 2022 for all selected research project consortia and external stakeholders. Project partners and stakeholders from research, policy and practice are invited to take part in this kick-off meeting.

Aim of the Meeting
This meeting is part of a two-day workshop, during which the project teams will get to know each other, share knowledge, look for potential synergies and work on strengthening the impact plans of their projects. With the WEF projects as a strong foundation and starting point, the intention at this meeting is to:
- Investigate the options of creating a knowledge network that should attract other researchers and potential end-users and link to adjacent initiatives to maximise relevance.
- Exchange, use and scaling of the research.
- Research plans will be presented as input for deliberations about research inception, policy dialogues and joint programme activities.
- Identify cross-linkages and develop joint pathways to outcomes for the programme.
About the Calls & Granted Projects
The South African National Research Foundation (NRF) and Dutch Research Council (NWO) granted two projects in the first call for proposals (2020) and two more in the second call for proposals (2021) of the Cooperation South Africa-The Netherlands research programme. The projects target solutions that balance trade-offs and amplify synergies between the food, water, and energy sectors.

About the granted projects in 2021
Background
The Dutch Research Council (NWO), through the Merian Fund, and the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa support a long-term scientific collaboration in the Water, Energy and Food (WEF) nexus field. By issuing calls for proposals regularly and by inviting consortia in which researchers from knowledge institutions from both countries work together with societal partners from public, semi-public and private organisations, NWO and the NRF hope to provide effective contributions to support transformations towards sustainability and gradually expand the knowledge base on the WEF nexus field.
Merian Fund
This programme falls under the Merian Fund. This is a fund for international cooperation with important science countries. The common thread within the Merian Fund is international research to promote the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals worldwide.
