Project // Stepping Up: Sustainability for Water, Energy and Food

STEPPING UP is a 3-year, EPSRC funded collaboration between sustainability researchers at universities and research institutes across the UK. The project aims to explore the potential opportunities of innovations the WEF Nexus, and understand the implications and challenges of achieving transformational change at different scales.

Current systems of water, energy and food provision are unsustainable and the decisions made in each sector, though often arising independently, have implications for sustainability in each of the others. Faced with challenges that include rising resource scarcity, growing societal inequalities, changing climates and increasingly urgent greenhouse gas mitigation targets there is need for a step-change that puts the UK on a pathway towards sustainable Water-Energy-Food (WEF) management. The four innovations central to research are:
  • Diversion of surplus food
  • Anaerobic Digestion
  • Valorisation
  • Insect Proteins
