Governance // An Introduction to Food-Energy-Water Nexus Thinking and Sustainability Governance
By Laura M. Pereira and Caitlin A. McElroy. This book explores emerging strategies for governing the natural resources of food, energy, and water. It is only since the 1960s that the governance of these resources has been formally addressed in many Western societies and although there have been great strides in environmental governance, our current approach is still insufficient.
Globally we are struggling to provide food, energy, and water resources in ways that allow for equitable use, continuing development, and a sustainable future. Some of the challenges to achieving better environmental governance exist because the governance of food, energy, and water resources is inextricably tied up with the larger politics of understanding the sustainability and value of the environment, or, as Dryzek (1997) calls it, the politics of the Earth. However, the pressure to succeed in governing these resources has never been so urgent. Our food, energy, and water resources, which we often refer to as FEW from here onwards, are stressed to near breaking point, primarily from human impacts. Their failure would have profound consequences for the environment as well as for human wellbeing. It is in the context of this urgency that the chapters in this book seek to find new ways of thinking about how we can govern FEW resources.
