“Today the countries of the region experience such climate impacts as change of temperature and water regimes, precipitation shifts, extreme increase of rains and droughts. This causes land degradation and desertification, worsen water quality and increase the burden on infrastructure. Against this backdrop, the achievement of carbon neutrality is becoming one of the most important strategic challenges requiring a unified solution at the regional level,” Zafar Makhmudov, the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia, said at the 5th Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2023) in Dushanbe.

The regional cooperation fosters addressing climate issues and adaptation and the Conference is a platform for promoting and enhancing the regional dialogue on national climate priorities and climate financing. In the course of the conference, two thematic sessions were devoted to the role of the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme in mitigating climate vulnerability, while ensuring more efficient use of water, energy and food (WEF).

The Conference convened over 300 people offline and 250 people online. Representatives of the relevant ministries of Central Asian countries, international organizations, non-governmental organizations, academia and youth attempted the conference. They gathered to coordinate further steps in the implementation of the Paris Agreement and discuss prevention measures of climate change in the region.

The 5th Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC-2023) was organized by the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) under Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program in the Aral Sea Basin AF (CAMP4ASB AF) and Central Asia Nexus Dialogue Project: Fostering Water, Energy and Food Security Nexus and Multi-Sector Investment (NEXUS) in cooperation with the Committee for Environmental Protection under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, the Central Asia Water & Energy Program (CAWEP), a partnership among the World Bank, the European Union, Switzerland and the United Kingdom, and is supported by PROGREEN. CAREC implements CAMP4ASB AF jointly with EC IFAS under the financial support of the World Bank and the Green Climate Fund.
