Innovative Water Management // Energy Efficiency in Water Pumping and Climate Change Mitigation: Triple Win for the Water Authority of Jordan

by Performance Management Unit (PMU), Ministry of Water and Irrigation (Jordan). The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) is the largest electricity consumer in the country, using about 15% of Jordan's entire electricity production. Safe and secure supply of energy, reliable water supply and fighting against climate change are closely interlinked in Jordan.

The Water Authority of Jordan (WAJ) is the largest electricity consumer in the country, using about 15% of Jordan's entire electricity production. Therefore, reaping saving potentials within WAJ frees up capacity for households and industry, hence supporting the economic development of the country. Considering that WAJ receives electricity at subsidized prices, this means also a reduction of the financial burden for the country.

This is the starting point for the project "Improvement of Energy Efficiency of WAJ" (IEE), implemented by WAJ and the Deutsche Gesellschaft fuer Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU) under its International Climate Initiative (ICI). In Phase 1 of the project, an energy audit was conducted for the major consumers of electricity. During Phase II, the measures resulting from Phase I are implemented. The focus is to use private sector operational expertise and private finance as far as possible, in order to achieve sustainable improvements.

Results show that the reduction potential identified in the energy audit can be reaped with the proposed measures. In the first three pumping stations, the energy consumption has been reduced by 35 %, WAJ saves 150'000 Euro p.a. and the operation has been improved due to involvement of private sector expertise. Approx. 27'000 t of CO2 emissions will be saved over the lifetime of the equipment. Overall, the IEE project has generated a triple win: firstly, energy cost reduction for WAJ; secondly, private sector development, and thirdly, greenhouse gas reduction.
