The successful candidate will join a team analyzing a wide range of issues about energy economics and climate change. Her/his research will focus on modeling the implications of energy use for sustainable development, including energy poverty and the water-energy-land nexus and work with the MESSAGE model and its extensions. The purpose of the research is to inform international policy efforts, such as climate mitigation, universal energy access, poverty eradication and other Sustainable Development Goals, and assess their synergies and trade-offs. The successful applicant, among other things, is expected to contribute to ongoing projects at IIASA, for example CD-LINKS, Integrated Solutions – Water Energy Land nexus and The World in 2050. The applicant must be prepared to process and manage large datasets, become proficient with a complex energy system model, and analyze results. In addition, the applicant must be prepared to develop new modeling approaches and think critically and independently about her/his research.

Requirements

Candidates should at a minimum have (or be close to completing) a Master’s in economics, engineering or science (e.g., mathematics, physics) coupled with some background in energy-economic analysis. Experience in economic/energy modeling and empirical analysis is a pre-requisite. Proficiency in optimization (e.g., linear or non-linear programming) is a strong asset. Interest and experience in issues related to sustainable development, including household energy use, energy access in developing countries, water use, or food security is beneficial. The selected candidate will interact with researchers of different nationalities, and have the chance to present scientific papers at conferences and workshops. IIASA offers an interdisciplinary workplace, with strong ties to a world-wide network of research institutions engaged in environmental and energy research and in particular on the analysis of climate change issues. Full details about this opportunity, appointment terms and how to apply can be found here Review of applications will be ongoing and continue until the post has been filled.
