Workshop // Energy, water and food security in relation to climate change and social inequality in the Andes

About trAndeS

The trAndeS programme was born as a joint initiative between the Freie Universität Berlin (FU Berlin) and the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (PUCP). It is executed with the support of the German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, DAAD) and with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (Bundesministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, BMZ). trAndeS seeks to create and disseminate scientific knowledge that can contribute to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals throughout the Andean Region. In particular, trAndeS focuses its activities on the link between two dimensions.

• First, sustainable development as included in the 17 United Nations Development Goals (ODS) defined by 2030.
• And second, the serious socio-economic, socio-political and socio-ecological inequalities that persist in the Andean region. Our objective is to identify how inequalities are one of the main challenges of ODS and how ODS can contribute to a significant reduction of inequalities.

About the workshop

The workshop of the EKLA-KAS plays an important role, as the workshop provides a first exchange and information input for the students. There will be an input lecture on water, energy and food security. In addition, the goal is to stimulate interaction and discussion among the participants. There will be two questions at the center of the workshop:

• What are the consequences of climate change in the Andean region, in particular on energy, water and nutrition?
• What political adaptation and strategies can be applied and what areas do they not cover?
