UCGIS Summer School 2017 // Collaborative Problem Solving with CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science

This year the theme will be "Collaborative Problem Solving with CyberGIS and Geospatial Data Science", a rich topic for GIS&T and related applications. Approximately 30 participants will collaborate in developing novel solutions to scientific problems, learning about and taking advantage of cutting-edge scientific advances and technical capabilities of cyberGIS (e.g. ROGER, http://go.illinois.edu/ROGER) and geospatial data science, and experiencing the kinds of professional interactions that are key to addressing complex geospatial problems and related big data challenges. The program is ideal for those working with geospatial sciences and technologies on topics relevant to STEM disciplines, with a particular focus placed on the following three interdisciplinary themes: emergency management, smart and connected communities, and the nexus of food, energy and water systems. This 2017 Summer School will be hosted by the CyberGIS Center for Advanced and Digital Studies and the National Center for Supercomputing Applications at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) from Monday May 15 - Saturday May 20, 2017, immediately prior to the UCGIS Symposium in Washington D.C. At the conclusion of the Summer School learning experience at UIUC, the participants will travel to the Symposium where they will share their knowledge in dedicated sessions. If you are a graduate student or early-career scholar at a UCGIS member institution and are currently working in a domain that already uses cyberGIS approaches, or you are interested in learning more about frontiers in cyberGIS and geospatial data science, this Summer School will offer new and exciting opportunities for your professional development, and will help you build connections with others in these fields. UCGIS and UIUC will offer travel awards through support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) for participating in the Summer School and subsequent Symposium.

Award

Awardees will receive NSF travel support to attend both the Summer School and the UCGIS Symposium. Each award is up to $2,000. Assistance for travel arrangements will be provided by UIUC.

Eligibility

• Applications will be accepted from current and incoming graduate students and early-career scholars within four years of graduating with their PhD.
• Applicants must be currently affiliated with a UCGIS member institution.
• Applicants who are not US citizens will need to report their visa status.
• Awardees must be able to participate on-site at UIUC for the entire program and attend the subsequent UCGIS symposium.

How to Apply?

Applications will be accepted starting January 20, 2017. Each application needs to include the following components as a single PDF.

• Abstract. A brief statement of interest that explains why you would like to participate in the Summer School and how the Summer School will contribute to your research and career development. The statement should be succinct (not to exceed one page)
• Short CV. A CV of one to two pages detailing your education and research experience.
• If you are a graduate student or a post-doc, a letter of recommendation from your faculty advisor is required. The letter should endorse the applicant’s participation in the Summer School and explain why the applicant is qualified to participate in the Summer School and how the experience will benefit the applicant’s research. The letter should be signed by the applicant’s advisor and uploaded as a pdf. Such a letter is not required for a faculty applicant.

Applications should be submitted via EasyChair, and will be due by February 20, 2017. Awardees will be notified by March 6, 2017.

• Read the "Overview" information, and then click on "New Submission."
  • Enter your information under the Author Information section.
  • For a title, simply enter your name.
  • EasyChair requires at least three keywords. Choose keywords reflecting your interest areas in cyberGIS and geospatial data science.
  • Upload a single PDF that includes your abstract, your short CV, and letter of recommendation (if required).
• After you have completed the form, press Submit to submit your application. Press submit only ONCE. It will take time to upload the submission.
