The Water-Energy-Food Nexus in the Levant // Challenges and Opportunities

A growing number of countries in semi-arid and arid regions of the world are going to experience severe pressures on natural resources. By 2050, between 4.8 and 5.5 billion people will live under conditions of absolute water scarcity. This will render meaningful local agriculture and thus domestically achieved food security almost impossible.

Moreover, it will contribute to further rural migration to urban areas as already observed in regions such as MENA. Water scarcity not only leads to questions about food security but also what this means for the social transformations of the affected economies.

This DAAD-funded workshop brings together leading water and food security scientists that work on the MENA region on how to address a future with little water for domestic food production.
