Session at EFITA2017 // Agrifood system and process engineering
The session at EFITA, the European Conference dedicated to the Future Use of ICT in the Agri-food Sector, Bioresource and Biomass Sectors, waits for contributors from experts of complex agri-food systems, from Process Systems Engineering, from ICT and especially from the field of Water-Energy-Food Nexus.

Session Summary
“2 litres of water are often sufficient for daily drinking purposes but it takes about 3000 litres to produce the daily food needs of a person” (FAO). Furthermore, considering that humanity is expected to growth to 9 billion by 2050, in the light of climate change it is mandatory to find pathways to organize the sustainable and resilient water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem processes more efficiently. Locally specific possibilities of land, water and bio-based utilization of solar energy for sufficient amount of healthy food, associated with material and energy by-products, are determined by agriculture, aquaculture and forestry. However, the time horizon dependent, local economic effectiveness might contradict to the sustainable and resilient exploitation of these renewable global resources, resulting in social conflicts. The challenging solution of this contradiction requires a holistic and dynamic balance model based interface between the agri-food, bioresource, biomass sectors and the tools of ICT. Recently, Process Systems Engineering has opened the application of its well developed and non-conventional methodologies also for the system of water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem processes. This special session focuses on the question of how to manage the trade-offs and to develop efficient, but sustainable and resilient solutions from the locally available natural and technological resources (i.e. from the design space). The key issue is the comprehensive consideration of all possibilities, combined with the multi-objective economic and natural evaluations of the various scenarios. This needs a “systemic but quantitative” and “simplified but multi-scale, extensible”, dynamic balance model based decision supporting methodologies. The session is expecting contributions to the above challenges, including but not limited to:- Analysis of the available resources in water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem networks for a given well defined territory (with optional consideration of “good practices”);
- Analysis of the possible set of alternative pathways, regarding water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem networks for a given well defined territory (with optional case studies);
- Conventional and non-conventional, dynamic balance based modeling and simulation methodologies for the analysis, planning and control of these interacting, complex networks;
- Solutions for effective utilization of available data for building more reliable dynamic balance models (case study preferred);
- Balance model based, multi-objective (multi-criteria) optimization methodologies for water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem networks with economic and natural objectives (case study preferred);
- Balance model based, multi-objective (multi-criteria) optimization methodologies, supporting consensus of actors with multiple interests in water, agri-food, energy, ecosystem networks (case study preferred).
