EMG Nexus Dialogues Series // Poverty and Environment in the SDGs - How a Nexus approach enables effective partnerships, synergy and implementation at country level

The second EMG (UN Environment Management Group) Nexus Dialogue to be held on 13-14 July in New York will focus on the poverty and environment nexus in the SDGs. A technical segment will explore opportunities to strengthen the implementation of the SDGs by looking at lessons learned and good practices at the nexus of poverty and the environment at country level. A subsequent policy segment will address challenges and opportunities for enhancing environment and poverty nexus partnerships as well as issues that require strategic planning by the UN system, including through the work of the EMG.

About the EMG Nexus Dialogues Series

The EMG Nexus Dialogue Series contributes to a common understanding of the integrated goals and targets of the Sustainable Development Goals, as well as the requirements and opportunities which these bring to UN agencies in supporting the implementation of the environmental dimension of the 2030 Agenda in a coherent and collaborative manner. The Dialogues provide an occasion for UN agencies and other stakeholders to identify areas of mutual interest and to better understand the transmission channels through which an action in one sector may impact the outcomes of another.

Agenda

The event consists of a technical session and a policy session. For the technical session, the agenda is available in parts:

Session 1. Setting the stage: the poverty and environment nexus in SDG implementation

  • Environmental management and poverty reduction from a science and policy perspective
  • Learning from the poverty and environment nexus – opportunities to strengthen the implementation of the SDGs
  • Mapping the poverty and environment nexus in the SDGs, highlighting potential for further synergy, efficiency and partnerships
  • Poverty-environment nexus in practice – lessons learned in cross-sectoral partnerships at country level

Session 2: Strengthening and scaling up poverty-environment partnerships

Discussion in breakout groups to discuss methods and tools to strengthen the poverty and environment nexus as well as its inclusion in planning, policymaking, and budgetary process at national level.

Session 3 Plenary Report by the facilitator(s) of the breakout session/ key messages for policy segment
