About COP27

At COP 27, countries come together to take action towards achieving the world's collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention. Building on the outcomes and momentum of COP 26 in Glasgow last year, nations are expected to demonstrate at COP 27 that they are in a new era of implementation by turning their commitments under the Paris Agreement into action. The conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

About the Session

Water storage is the key adaptation strategy for prolonged droughts expected to increase with climate change. Rainfall can be caught on the surface by infrastructure like dams and reservoirs but is also stored naturally when percolating into aquifers. Both kinds of reservoirs serve multiple purposes, be it stream flow regulation for naval transport, supply of irrigation and cooling water, energy production and securing baseflows for rivers and ecosystems. As several sectors are affected and benefitting, a coordinated Nexus approach is needed for managing them best.

The side event will focus on experiences and examples of water-energy-food-environment nexus planning and implementation in different countries. Speakers from different related sectors will present lessons learned and discuss the importance of the WEFE-Nexus planning as contribution to the efforts of the international community to mitigate and adapt to climate change, particularly by:

  • Showcasing the potentials and role of ground and surface water for water, energy, food security and for climate change mitigation and adaptation.
  • Debating approaches to build climate-resilient and sustainable food systems for food security, an appropriate use and management of water, energy and environment. Especially, the critical role and benefits of investments in agriculture land and water (irrigation) management from farm to basin level for increased climate resilience in the country.

The session advocates for a cross-sectoral, coordinated effort of different stakeholders that brings together a holistic management of the water and environmental resources with farm-level needs and innovations, while enabling financial and political support opportunities. It will showcase how to create strong team play between governments, international organizations, local authorities, civil society, and the private sector to scale local to global capacities, take collective action, and mobilize resources towards water and energy secure and resilient countries and agri-food systems.
