Webinar // Advancing Water Treatment Technologies to Impact the Water-Energy Nexus

This talk covers technical challenges and solutions for water treatment across broad component technologies (reverse osmosis, ultrafiltration, ion exchange, and macrofiltration). Case studies with a global focus are presented on minimizing natural water withdrawal and wastewater disposal, as well as minimizing energy consumption in several end-use applications.

Clean water and on-demand energy are intimately intertwined. Water is required to make use of energy and energy is required to make use of water. Globally, water is required in virtually everything we touch from growing and processing food to industrial processes that require energy. Energy production relies on large amounts of water. Alone in the U.S., electricity production from fossil fuels and nuclear energy requires 190,000M gal/d, accounting for 39% of all freshwater withdraws. In industrial applications, water is used in products itself or used for washing, cooling, heating or steam generation within various industry types such as steel, automotive, textile, beverage, electronics, pulp and paper, refining, and chemical. Common to these processes is that they are large water consumers and depending on the process, the water needs can vary greatly. The need to increase the efficiency of water treatment systems is driven both from economical and sustainability aspects. The drivers for change are increasing price of water and the access to good quality water in close proximity to factories, especially in areas suffering from natural water scarcity.

Lecturer

The course is conducted by Katariina Majamaa. Katariina Majamaa is a Global Application Development Leader for Dow Water and Process Solutions in Industrial Water and Power Generation (R&D). In this role, she is responsible for leading the technology research strategy for the market segment in partnership with the Global Strategic Marketing Manager. This includes development of the technology strategy via multigenerational plans for R&D development of new products and solutions for growth, identification and assessment of emerging and complementary technologies for growth, as well as understanding of competitive technologies in the market segment, development of strategic external partnerships and developing the intellectual property strategy to protect sustainable competitive advantage. Majamaa has recently assumed additional responsibilities as a North America Application Development leader. In this role, she has the responsibility for people leadership for application development team across Reverse Osmosis (RO), Ultrafiltration (UF), Fine Particle Filtration (TEQUATIC), and exploration of new technologies. Her team is partnered closely with Marketing to explore new technologies in the market and lead new product or application developments in R&D from concept through market launch Majamaa is currently located in Minneapolis, US. Majamaa joined The Dow Chemical Company in 2007 in Rheinmuenster, Germany as a Technical Service and Development engineer for reverse osmosis, nanofiltration and ultrafiltration membranes serving the Benelux, Nordic, Baltic, UK and Ireland markets. She later moved to Tarragona, Spain in 2010 to support the expansion of pilot capabilities and opening of the Tarragona Water Technology Application Center in 2011. Most recently, Katariina spent the last four months in Shanghai, China exploring the needs of Greater China market. Katariina earned her Master of Science degree in Chemical Engineering from Helsinki University of Technology, Finland. She also recently completed graduate studies with research in the area of biofouling with Delft University toward her PhD in Chemical Engineering.
