The event is being co-organized and supported by the German Ministry of Environment, the Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMU), the Regional Cooperation Council Secretariat, the Global Environment Facility (GEF) IW: LEARN project, the MED EUWI and the Global Water Partnership Mediterranean. The target is to discuss possible areas of cooperation towards achieving water and energy security in transboundary basins of South East Europe (SEE). It will seek to identify related challenges and priority issues; means to address these issues; possible follow-up activities including interventions in the frameworks of the Petersberg Phase II/Athens Declaration Process and the Regional Cooperation Council (RCC), as well as replicable knowledge and techniques. The event will contribute in initiating a wider dialogue on Water, Energy and Food Nexus in SEE with a view of introducing related considerations in the river basin management frameworks and feed the discussion about potential projects to be included in a new phase of the EU Water Initiative and particularly its Mediterranean component (MED EUWI). Moreover, importance of the topics to be discussed at the event is stressed in the SEE 2020 strategy as the core constituent of the new RCC Strategy and Work Programme 2014-2016. National authorities from SEE, major international organizations and private sector active in the fields of water resources management and hydropower production will be among the participating institutions.
