Nexus Forum // The Inaugural Penn State University Food, Energy and Water Nexus Forum
The Inaugural Penn State University Food, Energy and Water Nexus Forum is a knowledge and resource exchange platform that brings together academia, the private sector, development partners and the public sector - in an intergovernmental, all-of-Government approach - to address development challenges in the systems in which food, energy and water are nested. The FEW Nexus addresses primary resources required by all sectors and works to foster the responsible use of resources with consideration to their interconnections and linkages.
The FAO Country Representative, Kenya Dr. Gabriel Rugalema shall provide the Keynote address. Key contributors to the FEW Nexus Forum include Prof. Michael Adewumi, Vice Provost at Penn State University's Global Programs, Mr. Arif Neky, UN Kenya Strategic Partnerships Advisor and SDG Partnership Platform Coordinator, H.E. Jabor Bin Ali Al-Dosari, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary, Embassy of the State of Qatar, Nairobi.
Key public sector speakers include Prof. Kivutha Kibwana, Governor, Makueni County and H.E. Abdi Mohammed Abdi Mahamu, Governor, Wajir County and Hon. Yussuf Gedi, County Executive Committee Member Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Alternative Livelihoods, Wajir County.
Other key speakers include: Prof. Izael Pereira Da Silva DVC Research and Innovation at Strathmore University, Prof. Esther Obonyo, Associate Professor of Engineering Design and Architectural Engineering and Penn State Global Programs – Director Water Energy Food NEXUS East Africa, Emmanuel Machani, Lead at the Health Sector Development Partner Forum and Betty Korir, CEO at Credit Bank Ltd who are a FEW Nexus financial services partner.
Intergovernmental public sector speaker invitees at national level are drawn from the ministries in which Food, Energy and Water are nested [and dependent] including the Ministries of: Energy, Water and sanitation, Agricuture and Irrigation, Health, the National Treasury, Transport, Housng an dUrban Development, Industry, Trade and Cooperatives and the Office of the Deputy President. County level representation shall include the Frontier Counties Development Council, the Lake Region Economic Bloc with Wajir and Tana River counties presenting their various stages of development of the FEW Nexus.
The FEW Nexus works to generate local interventions in a consultative approach with local, national, regional and global cross-disciplinary actors in development; enabling the generatoon of local solutions for local problems, with the benefit of a global pool of knowledge and expertise.
The Inaugural FEW Nexus Forum provides a platform for the development of broad and active partnerships towards the attainment of global development goals including the SDGs, the Global Hunger and Food Security Agenda, the Global Health Security Agenda and national goals including Vision 2030 and the Big 4 Agenda. The forum shall also showcase intra-county, intergovernmental, North-South, South-South and Triangular partnerships it fosters and present best practices for nationwide and regional adoption of the FEW Nexus.
The Food, Energy and Water Nexus is regarded a social determinant of health and shall provide a platform for the implemntation of reccomendtions made at the Health Sector Development Partner Forum.
The FEW Nexus shall broadly impact the sectors food, energy and water are nested in, with lower and middle income Kenyans and marginalised populations, including refugees, as the primary target beneficiaries, The FEW Nexus is expected to have a transformational impact in Kenya's food and nutritional security outcomes, enhance the country's efficient energy production and foster improved water management practice.
