National Workshop // The Nexus between Water, Energy and Food in the Reventazón River Basin

This study is part of the activities of the ECLAC/GIZ project "The Water-Energy-Food Nexus in Latin America and the Caribbean: Public Policies for the Management of Interconnections". The objective of the workshop was to present the preliminary results of the study to a national audience, and by this means to verify, correct and complement the analysis. On the first day of the workshop, the results of the regional nexus study were presented, with emphasis on:

1. the concept of the nexus and its applicability in the specific conditions of Latin America and the Caribbean;
2. the priority linkages of the nexus in the region; And
3. proposals for better management of interdependencies.

The three interconnections identified by the national study as priorities in the Reventazón river basin were presented, analyzed and discussed:

1. the nexus between energy use and potable water supply;
2. the nexus between irrigated agriculture and energy use; And
3. the challenges of the electricity sector regulatory framework for multiple water use.

The second day of the workshop was dedicated to the presentation of experiences of application of the nexus approach by German Development Cooperation, the Inter-American Development Bank and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. Source: CEPAL website
