Presentation 1: The Water-Energy Nexus - Part 1

Water is currently an undervalued commodity and is often overlooked in the building modeling process. By integrating water modeling into the design process of commercial spaces, we can evaluate the effects of various conservation strategies and provide a more complete picture of consumed resources. In this presentation, we will review benchmarking and whole building modeling strategies, while we compare the effects of various conservation strategies on overall water consumption. We will also identify common water modeling challenges and provide resources for improved model accuracy.

  • Speaker: Kylie Zhao, PE, Affiliated Engineers Inc. Kylie Zhao, PE, is a Piping Engineer in AEI’s San Francisco Office and a leader in AEI’s national Water Stewardship Group. She is experienced with different facets of piping/plumbing engineering in high performance buildings. Her experience includes water conservation in commercial buildings, as well as system design for large healthcare, medical research and development laboratories, corporate facilities and schools. Ms. Zhao has expertise in systems for recycled water, domestic water, sanitary waste, storm drainage, and specialty gases systems.

Presentation 2: The Water-Energy Nexus - Part 2

As energy and water conservation targets continue to increase, so does the complexity of building systems to meet these goals. New technologies are rapidly being developed, however, simulation tools are not being developed at the same speed. Because of this, tools are incapable of accurately modeling the physics and controls of these complex systems.

This presentation highlights the limitations of modeling indirect-direct evaporative cooling using IES-VE and compares results with a custom-developed tool. The custom spreadsheet tool was developed for preliminary analysis, predicting cooling coil load reduction after two-stage evaporative cooling. A case study of a northern California commercial office building will be use to explain how evaporative cooling was modeled in an annual simulation. A comparison of results will be made.

  • Speaker: Megan Gunther, PE, LEED AP, WELL AP, Affiliated Engineers, Inc. Megan Gunther, PE, LEED AP, WELL AP, is a mechanical engineer and building performance consultant in AEI’s San Francisco office and plays a key role in leading the High Performance Design group. Her work focuses on the design of high performance buildings, in which she is responsible for building energy simulation, thermal comfort analysis, water efficiency and the design of mechanical systems. Ms. Gunther’s experience is in the design of research and development laboratories, healthcare facilities, higher education student life buildings and high-rise residential buildings.

Presentation 3: Carbon-Emission based Building Systems Design

It is widely recognized that building energy use results in significant greenhouse gas emissions and high performance design presents a significant opportunity to reduce energy use and carbon dioxide emissions as we move towards an all-electric future with zero or low carbon buildings through decarbonization of the electric supply grid.

  • Speaker: Henry Richardson, Wattime. As an analyst at WattTime, Henry helps WattTime’s partners and collaborators understand how they can affect the electric grid and achieve the greatest reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, whether through location-based differences or automated emissions reductions. Henry’s previous work and education focused on building performance, especially daylight, energy, and water.

  • Speaker: Te Qi, Atelier Ten. Te Qi is a Senior Environmental Designer at Atelier Ten focusing on Energy Analysis. He combines his technical competency and creativity across multiple disciplines – architecture, engineering and master planning – to develop integrated, cross-disciplinary solutions for projects. Te’s education focused on building performance and HVAC design.
