Global Sustainability Institute Workshop // Informing decision-making on shocks to the energy-food-water nexus: safeguarding local businesses

We would be delighted if you could attend the workshop hosted at the Future Business Centre on safeguarding local businesses which will take place from 9.30am — 2pm on Tuesday 6th October 2015. The workshop will bring together key individuals to help assess and map out how wide ranging expertise in the energy-food-water nexus can help better inform decision-making under shocks to the nexus. Delegates will explore how local businesses can safeguard against nexus shocks while also considering how collaboration can produce robust decision outcomes for resilience. The workshop will focus on examples from the East of England. Following the workshop, delegates will be invited on a tour of the Future Business Centre. The workshop will address the following broad topics: 1. What are the information gaps? 2. Who are the stakeholders? 3. What indicators are relevant? Context The Global Sustainability Institute (GSI) at Anglia Ruskin University (ARU) has been funded by the ESRC under its Nexus Network to establish a new network — the Nexus Shock (NS) Network. Nexus shocks are low-probability, high impact events that disrupt the energy-food-water sectors, threatening efficiency and sustainability. Examples include floods, droughts, energy blackouts and spikes in food price. The Network will bring together interdisciplinary and cross-sectorial expertise through a process of co-production to write a funding application that will outline plans to develop and explore strategies for overcoming the challenges associated with societal responses to nexus shocks. As part of this project, the Nexus Shocks Network is running five workshops on the following five themes: - Resilient finance - Resilient infrastructure - Governance, governments and shocks - Predicting shocks and hazards - Safeguarding local businesses Lunch and refreshments will be provided and travel expenses will be reimbursed.
