News // Keynote seminar: Integrating water-energy-food-environment planning for climate adaptation and resilience

The speakers for this event were Julien Harou, Chair in Water Engineering, University of Manchester; Claudia Ringler, Deputy Director of Environment and Production Technology Division, IFPRI; and John Matthews, Executive Director, AGWA. The seminar was chaired by James Dalton, Director, IUCN Global Water Programme. The keynote seminar discussed the future of sustainable infrastructure in water-energy-food-environment systems, reflecting on three years of FutureDAMS research.

Seminar oct 19

FutureDAMS is developing the knowledge base, tools and approach to better support resilient and sustainable development of large scale infrastructure in a warming world. The project is co-developing a decision-making framework and online integrated assessment toolset to help plan and design better infrastructure in complex natural resource systems, with a focus on developing countries. In this webinar, Professor Julien Harou presents the toolset for water-energy system planning, with comments from leading experts John Matthews and Claudia Ringler.

The toolset links energy and river basin modelling and can optimise resource system design: analysing the synergies and trade-offs of complex systems becomes accessible and transparent, facilitating decision making, thus helping people, economies and the environment adapt and prepare for the impacts of climate change.

Following the presentation, the panellists share their experience and knowledge on nexus planning for climate adaptation and resilience, discussing how to best align energy-environment systems, with a focus on practical investment assessment and design systems.
