Wetlands and human wellbeing: Perspectives from Asia and Africa

Wednesday February 7, 2024 | 13:00–14:00 UTC / 14:00–15:00 CET / 18:30–19:30 IST

Wetlands, through the provision of a range of direct and indirect ecosystem services, play a vital role in supporting and sustaining peoples’ livelihoods, health, and wellbeing. Yet over the past three centuries, almost 90 percent of these critically important ecosystems have been degraded. The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day is Wetlands and Human Wellbeing, and in our upcoming NEXUS Gains Talk, we explore this theme through case studies from Asia and Africa, with input from Ramsar.

  • Priyanie Amerasinghe, an Emeritus Scientist at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), will share experiences of wetlands and human wellbeing from Asia with a particular focus on the urban wetlands of Colombo, Sri Lanka.

  • Thomas Marambanyika joins us from Midlands State University, Zimbabwe to share experiences of wetlands and human wellbeing from Africa.

  • Our final speaker, Chaturangi Wickramaratne from IWMI, will then explore the role of Ramsar in addressing human wellbeing and wetland wise-use.

These presentations will be discussed by an expert panel from Asia and Africa, with the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The session will be moderated by Matthew McCartney, Research Group Leader – Sustainable Water Infrastructure & Ecosystems at IWMI and NEXUS Gains Lead.
