Session at DNC 2017 // Building-up monitoring and reporting on SDGs based on sub-national and national efforts

As part of its follow-up and review mechanisms, the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development encourages member states to “conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national and sub-national levels, which are country-led and country-driven”. These national reviews are expected to serve as a basis for the regular reviews by the high-level political forum (HLPF). Regular reviews by the HLPF are to be voluntary, state-led, undertaken by both developed and developing countries, and involve multiple stakeholders.

Events

Session at the Dresden Nexus Conference 2017 "SDGs and Nexus Approach - Monitoring and Implementation", 17-19 May 2017 During this session, we aim to summarize the identified indicators and trends for the published voluntary reviews with focus on resource efficiency and management, and integration of the indicators across the SDGs and on the particular focus. We will also look at the availability of these indicators and data for cities to explore opportunities to monitor SDG implementation at this level.

Objectives and expected outcome

To identify how resource efficiency and management are measured at the national level at the early stages of SDG implementation
To explore to what extent integration and synergies between the SDGs goals are realized in the actual national reporting efforts thus far
To identify ways of using SDG indicators on resource efficiency and management at the national level be monitored at the city and municipal levels to ensure accountability during implementation

This session will serve as a resource for inter-governmental organizations, policymakers, and civil society organizations engaged in monitoring SDG implementation. It will also be an aid to countries and municipal and city governments that are not already submitting voluntary reports, but are interested in doing so. By showing what indicators others are using, and which information they are collecting to show progress against those indicators, it will serve as a guide to other countries and municipalities.
