Both regional and cross-sectorial cooperation are highly important for addressing the challenges of the water-food and energy security nexus in transboundary basins.

Thursday 5 Sep 2013, 14:00-17:30 Room K22/23

The seminar will specifically explore forms of cooperation and coordination between transboundary water management and the energy sector. Most transboundary water management institutions are anchored within the water sector. However many of the grand challenges of transboundary water management relate to the utilization of shared water resources for hydropower, which is under the jurisdiction of the power sector. Transboundary cooperation in the power sector - for example through interconnecting upstream and downstream power systems - is in many situations a prerequisite for sharing benefits of water cooperation. The seminar will showcase examples of cooperation between the water and energy sectors in transboundary contexts. It will aim to extract lessons from successes and challenges encountered.
