15th International Conference on Environmental Science And Technology // Session "The 5 dimensions of Nexus: Water-Energy-Land-Climate-Food"

Land, food, energy, water and climate are interconnected, creating a coherent system (the ‘Nexus’), dominated by complexity and feedback. Putting pressure on one part of the Nexus can create pressures on the others. Management of the Nexus is critical to secure the efficient use of scarce natural resources. Global community is well aware of water, energy and food security challenges, but has so far addressed them within sectoral boundaries. At the national level, fragmented actions, lack of coordination, and inconsistencies between laws and regulatory frameworks may lead to misaligned policies. The identification of sustainable water management practices in different contexts and scales that are integrated with major global challenges, such as food security, ecosystem preservation, sustainable water management, low-carbon energy and climate change mitigation is substantial. Water and energy issues should be simultaneously addressed in the decision-making process, including all responsible parties at each sector individually, in order to identify broader influences and cross-sectoral impacts. A nexus approach to sectoral management, through enhanced dialogue, collaboration and coordination, is necessary to ensure that co-benefits and trade-offs are properly considered and that appropriate actions will be put in place.

About the 15th International Conference on Environmental Science And Technology

The International Conference on Environmental Science and Technology is one of the worldwide leading environmental conferences. This biennial conference brings together engineers, scientists, researchers, students, managers and other professionals in order to address and discuss emerging environmental issues. The main aim of the conference is the presentation of state-of-the art research and innovative technologies to address local and international critical environmental issues. A wide range of topics are presented while addressing the new opportunities for the emerging science-policy interface promoting the dialogue between the scientific and policy-making communities. The conference is supported by the University of the Aegean (Greece), together with the University of Salerno (Italy) and the Imperial College London (UK). The main organizer is the multi-disciplinary Global NEST (Network of Environmental Science and Technology); an international scientific movement that has been successfully developing for the last 29 years with members from more than 60 countries. Global NEST is an international scientific movement focusing on innovative environmental issues.
