In this episode of the Power for All podcast, William Brent speaks with Shilp Verma, a Researcher at the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), and a leading expert on the nexus of food, water, and solar energy. In support of this year’s UN Food Systems Summit, this podcast is part of a special series focused on the critical link between food systems and decentralized renewable energy, aimed at highlighting game-changing ideas in Africa and Asia that can help ensure sustainable energy for all and improve farmers’ lives.

William Brent conceives and coordinates Power for All campaigns, including jobs, agriculture and healthcare, and also oversees all communications and partner engagement. He has been working at the intersection of climate solutions and integrated marketing and communications for nearly two decades. William started and built the cleantech practice at Weber Shandwick (a multi-PR Global Agency of the Year winner and part of NYSE: IPG), where he advised multinationals, innovative start-ups and coalitions on brand, content strategy, advocacy, digital and social media and reputation management. His award-winning work included innovators engaged in solar, wind, clean cooking, electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure, clean water, biofuels and green building. Previously, he was executive director of a non-profit absorbed by Mercy Corps., and an entrepreneur who co-founded several companies, including a film production studio and a digital marketing agency. He was also a foreign correspondent and editor for many years in China, and still contributes regularly to leading media outlets.

Interviewee

Shilp Verma is Researcher, Water-Energy-Food Policies with the International Water Management Institute (IWMI) in India. An alumnus of University of Delhi, Institute of Rural Management, Anand (IRMA) and UNESCO-IHE, Delft, Shilp has nearly 20 years of experience in the water, energy and rural livelihoods domain. He has been associated with IWMI since 2001, in different capacities. In his current role, Shilp manages the IWMI-Tata Water Policy Program in India with a mandate of converting science into policy action. His research covers a range of themes relevant for smallholder farming and water security in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa.
