Description

The Researcher – Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems will be part of a new one CGIAR Research Initiative on NEXUS Gains: Realizing Multiple Benefits Across Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems. The researcher will play a key role in the NEXUS Gains activities in the Ganges basin, particularly Work Package 3 (energizing food and water systems) and 4 (WEFE Nexus governance). The successful candidate will be familiar with the policy landscape on water-energy-food-ecosystems in South Asia, have advanced knowledge of business models and governance issues associated with Water-Energy-Food and Ecosystems and have relevant experience in active stakeholder engagement. Working with the project leadership as well as with other CGIAR colleagues and national and international partners, the researcher will be part of a multi-national and multidisciplinary team that is contributing towards realizing gains across the water, energy, food and ecosystems in transboundary river basins by establishing and mainstreaming Nexus thinking and providing tools, guidelines, training and facilitation for analyses and research for development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the conceptualization, development and deployment of alternate business models for rapid, effective, equitable and sustainable deployment of renewable energy applications in agriculture especially in Ganga basin.
  • Collaborate with One CG NEXUS Gains leadership to fine-tune the activities to the specific context of Ganga basin.
  • Contribute to co-developing and implementing rigorous data collection and monitoring protocols in field experiments and action research pilots to test alternate business and finance models for solar energy applications in agriculture.
  • Assessing policy implications of action research field pilots related to accelerating equitable, affordable and sustainable energy access in eastern Ganga basin.
  • Provide inputs for the development of a ‘groundwater governance toolbox’ for Ganga basin by undertaking a comprehensive review of groundwater governance experiences, experiments and tools in India and South Asia.
  • Contribute to stakeholder engagement and institutional analyses to understand interests, role, influence and efforts in shaping policies at various scales.
  • Contribute to governance analyses and participatory learning processes; engagement and partnerships and co-designing of innovations.
  • Conceptualize, plan and organize policy dialogues and consultations in Ganga basin in partnership with relevant provincial and national government departments and national, regional and international partners.
  • Contribute to cross-country and cross-basin learning and synthesis – including, for instance, on international experiences and best practices in co-management of water, energy, food and ecosystems.
  • Maintain a high level of research output for publication outlets, including peer-reviewed journals within the wider scientific community, on topics of close relevance to the work.
  • Support the IWMI Anand Office Lead and IWMI India Country Representative in managing the IWMI and OneCG national, regional and international project portfolio.
  • Identify new research trends and niches and develop multi-year multi-partner proposals for innovative research.
  • Lead and contribute to proposal writing and fundraising opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding sources.
  • Provide information on relevant projects and research results and breakthroughs for communication to donors, research users, partners, networks and policy platforms.

Requirements

  • A PhD or equivalent in management, development economics, water management, environmental sciences, natural resources management, or a closely related field with at least 3 years relevant post-doctrate experience in developing country context, preferably in South Asia.
  • In exceptional cases, 8 years or more of relevant experience with Masters in a relevant field and exceptional record of publications in high impact journals may be considered.
  • Demonstrated in-depth knowledge and research experience relevant to the Water, Energy, Food and Ecosystems domain.
  • Strong track record of scientific publishing in peer-reviewed and high impact policy journals, with demonstrated development impact of past research.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to explain complex development challenges and interdisciplinary work to a policy audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, managers, and other stakeholders in a multicultural setting, with sensitivity and respect for diversity.
