COP27 // What does it take to accelerate investment in Water-Energy-Food Nexus Projects?

At COP 27, countries come together in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt for the largest annual gathering on climate action. In this context, RCREEE in partnership with RES4Africa organise a conference to present and discuss the state of art of the Water-Energy-Food Nexus in the MENA Region.

About COP27

At COP 27, countries come together to take action towards achieving the world's collective climate goals as agreed under the Paris Agreement and the Convention. Building on the outcomes and momentum of COP 26 in Glasgow last year, nations are expected to demonstrate at COP 27 that they are in a new era of implementation by turning their commitments under the Paris Agreement into action. The conference will take place from 6-18 November 2022 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

About the Session

In recent years, the Water-Energy-Food (WEF) Nexus approach has been more and more mainstreamed in international agendas (14 out of 17 SDGs are linked or have ripercussions on the water-energy-food nexus) and in the narrative of international and financial insitutions. But why is this happening? The WEF Nexus can reveal business models that look at how water, energy and food can be connected to respond to essential development needs, increasing economic productive capacities and driving socio-economic welfare, while supporting countries to mitigate and adaptat to chlimate change effects.

Middle Easte and North Africa (MENA) is already one of the most impacted area by climate change. Globally, the number of natural hazards has almost doubled since 1980s, while the average number of such events in the MENA region has almost tripled over the same period. During the period 2005 to 2015, annual per capita freshwater availability in the region dropped by about 20%, from 990 to 800 m3. The world average is ten times higher at 7,525 m3/year per capita. If no mitigation measures are taken, crop yields could drecrease by up to 30% for a 1.-2°C increase and by almost 60% for a 3-4°C increase. The region is expected to have the greatest economic losses from climate change-related water scarcity as GDP may decline by as much as 6% by 2050 due to water-related impacts on
agriculture, health and incomes.
In this context, RCREEE in partnership with RES4Africa and in the framework of the COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, organize a conference to present and discuss the state of art in the nexus "scene", analysing existing business models and financing mechanisms to provide a solid understanding of the current opportunities and obstacles in the MENA Region to deploy integrated projects from agrivoltaics to precision irrigation and cold storage solutions.

Objectives of the event

The event aims to contribute to accelerating the uptake of Water-Energy-Food Nexus solutions such as agrivoltaics, precision irrigation and cold storage solutions powered by renewables. Specific objectives include:

  • Gather private and public stakeholders for an open dialogue on current Water-Energy-Food Nexus projects around the world and in the MENA region.
  • Take stock of stakeholders’ perspectives and development of innovative technologies, business models and investment opportunities while understanding key challenges to accelerate project deployment.
  • Present the findings of the RES4Africa’s reports on WEF Nexus solutions and financing mechanisms for the MENA region.

The event will be held in a hybrid format (tbc) and comprises presentations and open discussions about
business and technologies development, policy and regulation, and financing mechanisms.

Agenda

The session will bring together representations from the public sector, financial institutions, and international experts to discuss barriers and possible entry points to leverage financing and business integrated approaches for Nexus solutions at scale.
