Private Sector // Principles for the Integration of the Nexus within Business

By Felix Dodds and Cole Simons. In the context of this article, the Nexus refers to four areas: water, food, energy and the impacts of climate change. The authors are suggesting a set of Nexus Principles for companies, designed to draw together previous principles set forth for individual sectors. These include the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) Food and Agriculture Business Principles, the UNGC CEO Water Mandate, the Policy Recommendations from the Bonn 2011 Water, Energy, Food Security Nexus Conference and the Principles from the Nexus Water, Food, Climate and Energy 2014 Conference Declaration.

Felix Dodds is a Senior Affiliate of the Water Institute and a Senior Fellow at the Global Research Institute at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, USA. He is also an Associate Fellow at the Tellus Institute and was the Executive Director of the Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future from 1992 to 2012. He is author or editor of several books on sustainable development and resource security. Cole Simons is a current junior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a dual public policy and peace, war, and defense major. He has previously supported the production of two books, “Governance for Sustainable Development: Ideas for the Post 2015 Agenda” and “The Plain Language Guide to Rio+20: Preparing for the New Development Agenda”. He serves as the Oversight and Advocacy Chair of UNC’s Student Congress where he is the primary advocate of student opinion to university administration and the state legislature. Simons plans to graduate in spring 2017 before pursuing a career in government.
