PPP // Building Partnerships for Resilience

This article is based on the experience of two organizations, WWF and SABMiller, that have worked closely together to help define the role of business with regard to water, energy and food issues. It comes more from a pragmatic sense of what we have learned along the way. The ultimate risk for companies arises not so much from the incremental impacts they may have on resources, but from the growing challenges of the global management and reconciliation of societal and business needs related to the production of water, food and energy.

David Norman was Senior Manager for Sustainable Development Policy at SABMiller from 2013 to 2015, responsible for the company’s engagement in policy processes across sustainable development issues. Before this role, he was WWF-UK’s Director of Campaigns and Director of External Affairs, working on a wide range of environmental and development issues with UK and European policy-makers and businesses. He was previously Director of Policy and Communications for the UK’s Liberal Democrat Party, co-chair of the Commonwealth Education Fund’s Management Committee, and Global Education Adviser for Save the Children UK. David now runs Global Insight Consulting, helping companies, governments and NGOs to build stronger partnerships and strategies for sustainable development. Stuart Orr has a background in the private sector and academic research and joined WWF in 2006. His work explores the role of the private sector with regard to development and specifically water-related issues. Orr has published mainly on water measurement, agricultural policy and water-related risk, with some specific work on food, water and energy in relation to biofuels and dam development. He also sits on a number of sustainability boards and initiatives.
