As part of the stakeholder engagement process for the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference, a workshop held during the UNCSD African Regional Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 at the UN Economic Commission for Africa in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on the 19th of October, represented a further attempt to address the linkages between water, energy and food security and the challenges for a multisectoral approach. The event was moderated by Jangustav Strandenaes, of Information, Governance, Environment and Advocacy (IEGA) Forum, and Jack Cornforth, of Stakeholder Forum for a Sustainable Future. The panellist was Lucy Mulenkei, of Indigenous Information Network, Nairobi, Kenya and member of the Bonn2011 Nexus Conference Stakeholder International Advisory Group (IAG). In the first part of the workshop, the moderators and panellist highlighted the importance of the nexus approach, and emphasised the inadequacy of orthodox approaches to water, energy and food security. The second part of the workshop saw small groups arranged in roundtable format discuss the region's key issues and challenges resource security, while the final part saw each group report their findings and policy recommendations to the floor. The participants described the poor levels of water, energy and food security across the continent, with insufficient institutional coordination often leading to ineffective resource management. Within this context, a wide range of suggestions were made addressing how these key challenges might be overcome.
