Video // Green Pumps for Jordan’s Water to combat Climate Change

This video explains how highly energy efficient water pumps can contribute to improve water, energy, and food security in the water scarce country Jordan. At the same time, CO2-emmissions are lowered, which marks a significant contribution in meeting Jordan´s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) to the Paris Agreement.

Jordan is one of the driest countries on earth and uses more electricity for its water supply than any other industry consumes in the country: 15 percent of the countries’ entire electricity consumption. In spite of that, many people only have running water one day a week and even then, it does not always reach the customers. The project Water and Wastewater Companies for Climate Mitigation (WaCCliM) aims to improve the pumping system by introducing highly efficient variable frequency driven pumps into Miyahuna Water Companies’ water system. The community of Madaba is looking forward to achieve a continuous supply with water. Additionally, the implementation of the pumps would lead to a reduction of both, electricity consumption and CO2-emissions. Under the Paris Climate Agreement’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), Jordan has set a target of reducing GHG emissions by 14%. Mitigating GHG emissions in the water sector would make a significant contribution to achieving this target.
