Case Study // Waste Management in Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia
By Martin Schaub and Jérémie Bertrand. This case study presents a concept for the implementation of an Urban Nexus-approach based waste management system in the city of Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia. Tanjung Pinang is the capital and second largest city of the Indonesian Riau Islands province. The 250,000 inhabitants produce 160 tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) daily of which apparently only half is collected and disposed at Ganet Landfill.
This report presents a concept for the implementation of a waste management system in the city of Tanjung Pinang, Indonesia, that can be realized step-by-step. This sequential approach allows the city of Tanjung Pinang to develop and improve their waste management system over time and in line with its financial possibilities.
In order to improve the waste management system in Tajung Pinang, the report develops a step- by-step strategy that in its final stage leads to the implementation of a mechanical biological treatment (MBT) at Ganet Landfill. In an MBT plant, waste is turned into compost or biogas and refuse derived fuel (RDF) which can be used for power generation. Hence an MBT plant allows to make maximum use of the energy in the waste.
The project team is convinced that the implementation of a mechanical biological waste treatment process on the Ganet Landfill site constitutes the best solution also in terms of rationalization of costs (workforce, gas treatment, water treatment).
This report emphasizes the necessity to implement a waste management system in phases consisting of mechanical pre-treatment, anaerobic box digestion / MYT® and subsequent composting / bio drying.
The study has been undertaken as part of the project "Integrated Resource Management in Asian Cities: The Urban NEXUS". Similar studies have been published for cities in India, Indonesia and Vietnam.
