Environmental, economic and societal security are interdependently related to availability and fair access to natural resources, in particular water, land and energy. Indeed, these Nexus elements are highly dependent, crucial for well-being and impacting social cohesion. In the Mediterranean region the water scarcity and land degradation do not match sustainable agricultural practices and often the defense of ecosystems is in conflict with economic growth.
The research conducted at the Università degli Studi di Firenze (UniFI), Dipartimento di Ingegneria Civile e Ambientale, aims at developing a multi-sector transdisciplinary approach (integrating ecological and hydrological sciences with social sciences and economics aspects) in order to interlink the WEF components of the Nexus with the ecosystems protection. The research is focused on the development of indicators based on the ecosystem services concept to link climate, energy, water and biodiversity variables, and support the creation of an assessment framework for the WEFE Nexus.
