PhD // Hydrological Modeling at Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), Germany

PIK are looking for a highly motivated PhD student to conduct their research in the field of hydrological modelling for climate impact assessment and the food-water-energy nexus with the aim of generating results relevant to end-users in project target countries (India, Peru, Tanzania).

Working together with Indian, Peruvian and Tanzanian governments, research institutes and organizations, we aim to transform research into user-oriented climate services and policy that enable each country to better adapt to climate change in the complementary fields Climate, Hydrology and Water Resources, Agriculture and Migration. The work is carried out within the three-year project EPICC which will be funded by the International Climate Initiative (IKI), a program of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Building and Nuclear Safety of Germany – BMUB.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct hydrological modelling studies from model set-up to scenario testing and collection and analyzes of data (e.g. water management, climate data etc.) for each one of the project target countries (Tanzania, Peru, India) with special focus on Peru
  • Contribute to organization of stakeholder workshops in Tanzania, India and Peru
  • Write and publish articles in peer-reviewed journals that highlight findings from the research project (at least one paper per year), work on the deliverables for the projects as well as present research findings at international conferences

  • The envisaged starting date for the position is as soon as possible and subject to approval of funding.
  • The position will be funded for 3 years .
  • Salaries are according to the German public tariff scheme E13 TV-L, 65%.


  • You hold a Master degree in Hydrology, Geography, Engineering/Civil Engineering with focus on Water Resources or related fields.
  • You have profound knowledge in hydrology, hydraulics, water resources management, ideally in climate impact analyses, and food-water-energy nexus analysis in particular for Peru.
  • You have experience in hydrological/hydraulic modeling (process-based/ physically-based) and climate impact modeling expertise as well as good statistical and programming expertise.
  • You have a strong interest in water science.
  • You are highly motivated and goal-oriented and want to pursue a PhD.
  • Experiences in working in developing countries (preferably in the target countries Tanzania, India, Peru) are an asset plus willingness to travel to the target countries.
  • You have good communications skills and are fluent in oral and written English. Language skills in Spanish are an advantage.
