On 08 September 2021, UNU-EHS launched their new report ‘Interconnected Disaster Risks’, which will become an annual publication. The report analysed ten worldwide disasters from 2020/21 and highlighted how these disparate events were interconnected by their causes and impacts.

It showed particularly how one disaster directly impacted the occurrence of another, so indirectly influencing other hazards, which eventually led to cascading impacts that stem from common root causes. Using case studies, this report communicates the need for interconnected thinking to advance our risk perception and our potential for effective risk management.

Dr Zita Sebesvari is Deputy Director & Head of Environmental Vulnerability & Ecosystem Services Section at United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS).

She is an expert in the fields of social-ecological risk assessments, ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction (Eco-DRR), and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA), and holds a PhD in Environmental Science from the Carl von Ossietzky University in Oldenburg, Germany.

Dr Sebesvari is an Executive Board member of the Munich Climate Insurance Initiative (MCII), currently serves as the chair of the science-policy network Partnership for Environment and Disaster Risk Reduction (PEDRR) and as a focal point to network Friends of Ecosystem-based Adaptation (FEBA).

She also (co)-authored around 70 publications and served as a Lead Author of the IPCC Special Report on Ocean and the Cryosphere in a Changing Climate (SROCC).

Nexus Seminar Series

UNU-FLORES, in collaboration with PRISMA – Centre for Sustainability Assessment and Policy on behalf of TU Dresden, is delighted to present the Nexus Seminar Series. The joint seminar series, which launched in 2015, features lectures by senior scholars and successful practitioners that highlight all dimensions of research on the Nexus Approach, ranging from hands-on implementation strategies to theoretical debates. The Nexus Seminars serve not only as a platform for scientific exchange and cooperation between UNU-FLORES and TU Dresden but also as a medium for the partner institutions to discuss their research with a broader audience.

Taking place once a month, each seminar is open to the public and under the current circumstances will be delivered via a virtual Zoom video conference.
