In recent years, it has become clear that the world's challenge to address the challenge the world faces in addressing water scarcity. For Latin America, the agriculture, hydropower, mining, and sanitation are the sectors that will present the greatest competition for water use. And Peru is no stranger to such a situation.Rainy season in the Sierra caused the agricultural sector of the departments of Apurímac, Arequipa, Ayacucho and Puno will be severely impacted.
In turn, the province of Lima, with a population of over 10 million inhabitants, was at high risk of drinking water shortages due to the lack of rainfall in the Chillon, Rimac, Lurín, Mantaro and Chilca basins. In addition, the inefficient and unsustainable use of water resources represents a constant challenge for the country.
About the event
The objective of the event is to promote synergies between diverse stakeholders so as to enable the efficient and sustainable use of resources, promoting Nexus projects and initiatives at the municipal level to contribute to the SDGs and to ensure water, energy, and food security. The event builds on the implementation of the demonstration project in San Pedro de Casta, which oversaw the rehabilitation of a 40,000m3 ancestral lagoon, the implementation of a composting center, a solar-powered breeding center for guinea pigs, new greenhouses, and capacity building for the community.
Leveraging this successful experience, the event will bring together mayors, provincial governments, civil society, government representatives and members of the international development community to discuss the benefits of applying the Nexus approach.
