The Water-Energy-Food Nexus in the Levant // Challenges and Opportunities

A growing number of countries in semi-arid and arid regions of the world are going to experience severe pressures on natural resources. By 2050, between 4.8 and 5.5 billion people will live under conditions of absolute water scarcity. This will render meaningful local agriculture and thus domestically achieved food security almost impossible.

Moreover, it will contribute to further rural migration to urban areas as already observed in regions such as MENA. Water scarcity not only leads to questions about food security but also what this means for the social transformations of the affected economies.

This DAAD-funded workshop brings together leading water and food security scientists that work on the MENA region on how to address a future with little water for domestic food production.

Journal Paper // A Decision Support Tool to Enhance Agricultural Growth in the Mékrou River Basin (West Africa)

By Angel Udiasa, Marco Pastoria, Céline Dondeynaza, Cesar Carmona Moreno, Abdou Ali, Luigi Cattaneo, Javier Cano. This paper describes the implementation of E-Water, an open software Decision Support System (DSS), designed to help local managers assess the Water Energy Food Environment (WEFE) nexus. E-Water aims at providing optimal management solutions to enhance food crop production at river basin level. The DSS was applied in the transboundary Mékrou river basin, shared among Benin, Burkina...
