The Water-Energy-Food Nexus in the Levant // Challenges and Opportunities

A growing number of countries in semi-arid and arid regions of the world are going to experience severe pressures on natural resources. By 2050, between 4.8 and 5.5 billion people will live under conditions of absolute water scarcity. This will render meaningful local agriculture and thus domestically achieved food security almost impossible.

Moreover, it will contribute to further rural migration to urban areas as already observed in regions such as MENA. Water scarcity not only leads to questions about food security but also what this means for the social transformations of the affected economies.

This DAAD-funded workshop brings together leading water and food security scientists that work on the MENA region on how to address a future with little water for domestic food production.

Modelling and Assessment

Nexus Modelling // Towards Ranking the Water–Energy–Food–Land Use–Climate Nexus Interlinkages for Building a Nexus Conceptual Model with a Heuristic Algorithm

By Chrysi S. Laspidou, Nikolaos Mellios and Dimitris Kofinas. In this article, a practical heuristic approach for gaining a systemic and contextual perspective on nexus component interlinkages is presented, by building on a simple three-point typology of interactions. The approach is simple and can be applied in any case study a nexus analysis is pursued, regardless of data availability.
