Water Utilities for Climate Mitigation // Energy-efficient Pumps for Climate Mitigation in Madaba, Jordan

By Mohammad Almalla. The governorate of Madaba, Jordan receives its drinking water from the Hidaan wells which are more than 400m lower located that the inhabited areas. Consequently, more than 70% of the energy in the Miyahuna Water Company is used to lift the water. The WaCCliM project assessed together with the University of Jordan the energy efficiency of the supply network. With new retrofitted pumps the energy savings exceed 1000 tons CO2 per year.

SWWW 2018 Outcomes // MENA Focus: Benefits for Ecosystems and Wetlands Through the Nexus

In the Mediterranean, wetlands are among its richest ecosystems, providing exceptional value and services including water purification, flood control, carbon sink and shoreline stability. However, they are also among its most threatened ecosystems with more than half having disappeared during the 20th century, and most of the rest under degradation or artificialization, mainly through water over-abstraction, urban development and tourism expansion, pollution and drainage.

Everybody with research background or practical experience in this region is invited to submit best practice examples for this Nexus Atlas. Deadline is 31 Dec 2018.

The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has published its new “Strategy for Interlinkages Between Water, Energy and Agriculture (Nexus Perspective) – Synergies and Conflicting Goals” as a guideline for German development cooperation. This article introduces the Nexus strategy by highlighting how some of the fields of action identified in the strategy are currently being addressed in the MENA region.

The Iraq Energy Institute (IEI) formed a task force on the future of Iraq’s water resources. The initiative was a result of a workshop entitled “Towards Sustainable Water Resources Management in Iraq” that was held in partnership with Al-Kindi Society of Engineers at the Chartered Institution of Water and Environmental Management in London on 30 June 2018.

Nexus in MENA // Nexus Session at the 3rd Arab Water Conference in Kuwait, 2-3 May, 2018

The Third Arab Water Conference in Kuwait included a working session on the water-energy-food (WEF) Nexus that convened on 3 May 2018. The conference was held alongside the 10th meeting of the Arab Ministerial Council for Water, led by the League of Arab States (LAS), and focused on the theme of “Arab Integration in Water Resources Management.”
