Project description

The agricultural intensification, the increase of urbanization of rural areas and their reclamation have greatly reduced the biodiversity in the Po plain area. In the LIFE GREEN4BLUE project is crucial the study of soil-sediment interaction in the areas served by the reclamation channel network, as well as the investigation on fertility, emission of greenhouse gases and C sequestration. In some pilot areas, the water quality of channels will be also investigated. The investigation of the complex relationship among soil, sediment and water will allow us to highlight the role of soil and its capacity to provide ecosystem services useful for the wider aim of denaturalization of some areas and to monitor the new pedogenesis in lowland soil, creating ecological corridors able to support habitat of native and resilient plants, increasing the plant biodiversity, counteracting habitat fragmentation, and creating suitable areas for water phytodepuration.
