Training // Advanced School on Water Energy Food Nexus

The Advanced School on Water-Energy-Food Nexus will help graduate students, post-docs, and young researchers to analyse complex systems by understanding the societal, economic and environmental impacts involved in decisions regarding technology innovation and policies design. They will learn different assessment methods, modelling techniques and risk analysis to apply them individually or in combination to research projects, decision-making process or policy development.

Where and when

The school will be held at the University of Campinas, 100 km from São Paulo. The School of Civil Engineering, Architecture, and Urban Planning will host the lectures, and technical visits are planned to participants explore other research facilities in São Paulo state.

15-26 Oct 2018

Background

Achieving water, energy, and food security is a future central challenge that is possible even under difficult and challenging global economic conditions. It also emphasises the human dimension and fulfilment of fundamental human rights. Global demand and supply assessments predict significant shortfalls in water and food in the future, but this should not mask the reality that universal access to minimum standards of water, energy, and food can be achieved and sustained within planetary boundaries provided there is political commitment and an appropriate enabling environment.

The word nexus means the understanding of interdependencies, tensions, and trade-offs. In the context of environmental change, the water, energy and food systems are inextricably linked; and any effort to target sustainability needs to consider their broader connections. Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are mostly dependent on solutions using this nexus approach.

Application

Deadline: 30 June 2018

The organisers invite talented pre-PhD students, post-doctoral fellows and young researchers from around the world to apply for the Water-Energy-Food Nexus School. The Advanced Science School will gather twelve distinguished scientists and talented young researchers from diverse backgrounds for an interdisciplinary school on the importance of using the nexus approach to the complex problems of the modern world.

Participants will be given access to the most recent and cutting-edge research on WEF nexus through various lectures and technical visits. They will have the opportunity to show their study and learn the practice, and discuss how the simple can outperform the complex issues. Each lecture also involves debates and questions, allowing for networking with internationally renowned researchers and fellow young scholars.

Eligibility Criteria

An independent committee (yet to be nominated) will select potential participants. The application package includes an application letter (ca. 600-800 words), a CV, English proficiency proof, one letter of recommendation and your current research project (1 page). Regarding the application letter, participants need to explain their interest in Water-Energy-Food Nexus and to describe the relation that they see between their work and benefits and the nexus approach proposed in the School outline.

All events will be conducted in English; therefore, participants must provide a proof of proficiency in English to actively participate in the activities. Download the English Language Certificate form: WEFNexus 2018_EnglishCertificate. More information can be found on our FAQ page.

Funding travel and hotel expenses will be covered for those participants who meet the following criteria:

  • International students;
  • Brazilian students, except those residing in Campinas metropolitan region, Unicamp students and FAPESP scholarship holders.

Participants will be able to apply between the 15 May and 30 June 2018 at midnight Brasilia time (UTC/GMT – 3 hours)
Admission selections will be announced on 30 July 2018.

About the Advaned Schools Programme by São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS)

The São Paulo School of Advanced Science (SPSAS) has already financed several schools which were attended by thousands of researchers and students from several countries. Through the SPSAS, the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP) offers to fund the organisation of short duration courses in advanced research in the different areas of knowledge in the State of Sao Paulo.

It is expected that each SPSAS offers short duration (around 2 weeks) courses in advanced themes in science and technology, contributing to the formation of the young attendants. Though this initiative FAPESP expects to establish, in the State of Sao Paulo, a globally competitive hub for talented researchers. The SPSAS lecturers are scientists with excellent qualification and prominence in their research fields, including foreign invited scientists.

The students must be enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs in Brazil or abroad, being potential candidates for master’s, doctorate or post-doctoral programs in higher education and research institutes in the State of Sao Paulo. Recently graduated PhD’s can also be accepted. The students selected to participate in the courses will have the opportunity to present, in posters sections, their research results, discussing the progress with participating scientists. Selected students from other cities, states or countries are entitled to receive benefits to cover the expenses in airline tickets, transportation from the airport to hotel and back and daily allowance in the city where the school will be organised.
