PhD Studentship // Stakeholder involvement in policy evaluation in Institute for Agri-Food Research and Innovation (IAFRI)

The studentship is linked to the ESRC CECAN Centre for the Evaluation of Complexity across the Nexus. Award is worth £16,805 per year, contributing towards your PhD tuition fees and living costs. Application deadline is 9 Jan 17.

Start date and duration

April 2017 for 3 years.

Overview

The evaluation of public policy is particularly challenging in complex settings such as across the Energy-Environment-Food nexus. This social science studentship will consider how nexus policy evaluation is accessed, used and informed by external stakeholders and wider publics. It will build on previous research reflecting on the nature of expertise, open policy making and evidence-based policy to consider: whose expertise counts within policy evaluation; how is stakeholder involvement managed and what methodological approaches are adopted; to what extent does it enhance the quality of the policy evaluation undertaken; and what happens when stakeholders use evaluations to challenge government.

Climate Change

Nexus Blog // Understanding the Water-Energy-Food Nexus in a warming Climate

In this article, the authors explore what the WEF Nexus is, how to minimize trade-offs and maximise co-benefits within it, and what opportunities it offers to address the challenges of a changing climate. They further draw on ongoing research in Tanzania’s Rufiji River Basin – a case that exemplifies key issues in the WEF nexus – where ambitious development plans cut across several sectors and could be severely limited by future climate change.
