Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme MENA // Environment and Development Forum Technical Session: Upscaling the WEF Nexus for a Climate Resilient Future
On September 13, 2022 the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme (co-financed by the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), and European Union (EU) and implemented by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit, GIZ) and the League of Arab States and were proud to host a panel discussion involving high-level representatives from the agricultural, energy and water sector in the region.
The high level panel discussion involved representatives from the agricultural, energy and water sector in the region, including the Regional Centre for Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD), the Energy, Environment and Water Research Centre (EEWR), the Cyprus Institute and the Centre for Environment and Development for the Arab Region and Europe (CEDARE), our partners (Gebal Egypt) as well as representatives from civil society and the farming community in Egypt.
The technical session focused on how water and energy secure food supply and nutrition and the following points were discussed:
- The challenges faced by farmers in arid and remote areas.
- Factors needed to upscale successful nexus models, how can we help small and medium farmers invest in replicating successful models.
- The transboundary aspect of the WEF Nexus approach.
- Key messages from League of Arab State regarding the WEF nexus towards the coming COP 27.
This event was organized by the Nexus Regional Dialogues Programme MENA which aims to anchor the Nexus approach in the MENA region through three different initiatives: the Minaret II Initiative (Nexus in Urban Resilience), the Nexus Farm initiative (how to upscale WEF Nexus technologies at farm level), and institutionalizing a Water-Energy Nexus working group in Jordan.
